The Old Bulls Head Reviews

Geoffrey
Emerging from an industrial past, Chapel is probably underrated as a picturesque town and centre for the nothern Peak District. We had a lovely long weekend family stay for 10 plenty of room! Owner and neighbour were both v helpful. Maintenance generally good but my wife commented on 2 loose wc seats. Heating was fine, though some of the windows might be draughty in winter the price you pay for having a characterful 'listed' building, I suppose. Some windows have a good view of the historic church, but the bells were never a problem. Kids enjoyed the hot tub. Coop & supermarket both a short walk. Unusual ring & hook game to remind us it was the 'Bull's Head' our 10yrold grandson seemed quickly to obtain world champion status, but we didn't try him on the snooker. Brilliant!
Fantastic building, very clean. Plenty of equipment in the kitchen. Darts etc. good fun for a group. Property looks much better in photos than in reality. Poor quality maintenance sadly let us down, but owner very apologetic and quick to respond to issues. Hopefully, now they have a comprehensive list of everything that needs improving, things will be better for future guests.

We stayed at the Old Bulls Head over the New Year with our extended family, ranging from a baby to our 83 year old dad. The property is very spacious and well equipped. The pool table, darts and bull ring game were an extra bonus and kept us entertained. Also the hot tube was well used and enjoyed . The bedrooms are comfortable and the whole property was warm nice to relax in . It is well placed to visit Buxton and Castleton. Chapel itself is a nice village and we enjoyed visiting some of the bars and restaurants. I would recommend the accommodation and hopefully we will return for another family gathering Many thanks
What a fantastic place The Bulls Head is. I booked it for a big surprise 30th birthday and it was the perfect venue. The rooms are comfy and spacious, the whole place was lovely and warm. We found everything we needed in the kitchen and the welcome pack was a lovely touch. The hot tub, games and dart board kept everyone amused in the evening and we went on some lovely walks in the day. We all had an amazing time and will book again for sure when we next have a big family birthday.
A fabulous renovation, carefully ensuring original features exist. The dart board was a crowd pleaser with the kids as was the hot tub with the adults. Fabulous for a family getaway
Property had everything we needed, was a nice touch when the owner emailed me some recommendations of where to go.

A beautiful property and good for a family get together with the kitchen well equipped. The beds and pillows are lovely and comfy. We had a welcome pack when we arrived which was a nice touch. We were let down by the poor maintenance and cleaning in different areas. The garden is very small and the furniture outside is mostly broken. It also needs the bushes around the hot tub cutting back. It is not a cheap place to stay, I did pass all my concerns back to the owner who I felt was already aware of the issues I pointed out.
Robert
Very enjoyable stay at this old converted pub. Rooms are very spacious, especially the ones with double beds in them. The whole place is very clean and theres everything you need in the place or in the town itself, all within walking dad distance. My only little gripe would be that the towels are abit small, showers are not very powerful and the dart board needs replacing but this would not put me off booking this place again. Highly recommend this place

We had a great time! The Old Bulls Head has lots of character, is well equipped and spacious. The hot tub and seating area is great and a good 'chill out' space. The beds are comfortable, its good to have a box of games, dart board, bull ring game and a snooker table. Its locations is good and view are great. We had a wonderful family time together. Would highly recommend it!
Lovely property ideal for a multi generational special birthday celebration. Some maintenance may be needed in the coming months ie.gate starting to come loose but no problems at all. Well stocked kitchen with platescutleryutensils etc, comfortable beds plenty towels etc The renovation has been done very well, thank you for having us!
We had a great family gettogether plenty of space, well equipped kitchen. The hot tub and snooker table were very popular. The house is well located for beautiful walks and all necessary grocery shopping. Two negative points, though the towels provided were very small, and there was no heating on the morning we left, so we spent a chilly couple of hours having showers and breakfast not sure if this was a fault with the boiler or a deliberate policy to make sure we didn't stay too long !

We have just got back from a 3 day break, 2 adults, 10 kids. The Old Bulls Head far exceeded our expectations, what an amazing building! Extremely spacious yet still super homely with lots of character. It was lovely and clean from top to bottom with plug ins throughout making it smell amazing. It was also lovely and warm on arrival. The beds and bedding were soooooo comfy, a factor that quite often lets down stays like this but not here. We had no trouble at all cooking all 3 nights for 12 for with the oven and large air fryer provided and plenty of crockery & cutlery meant we could still function while the dishwasher was in use. The location is great, shops, bars, restaurants and walks within minutes. The poolsnooker, darts & hot tub went down an absolute storm with the kids. There is nothing we can knock, just wish we had stayed longer!

Property location is excellent and parking for 4 cars. However difficult to park in the dark . A light would be helpful. It would be good if the high chairs and travel cot were on the property listing. It clearly says on the Sykes website that no other facilities available on request. The kitchen is not adequate for 12 people . We had 9 adults and 2 children and struggled for space in the fridge, freezer and oven. Had to leave food in the back porch fortunately it was cold Plenty of plates, bowls, mugs and kitchen equipment though. The lounge was cold and when we turned the gas fire in the corner on, there was a strong smell of gas. It may be that the radiators downstairs need bleeding. One of the light bulbs was not working when we arrived. This was not a problem but I would expect them to be working when I arrive. Hot tub was great and neighbours lovely despite what previous guests said Despite all the above issues, we had a great weekend . Great dining round the big table and lots of pool was played . We had a great day out in Buxton and enjoyed the boat trip in Speedwell Caves
Claire
The house was lovely, very well equipped and homely. The two leather sofas were comfy but seemed to slope inwardly. The beds were all really comfortable. It was a great bonus to have the snookerpool table and dart board and the hot tub. The house is in a perfect position in the town and the town had a great selection of shopspubscafes. The people all seemed really friendly and welcoming. Having the parking was a useful edition, it is a tight entrance and you have to watch for the lump of concrete on the ground as you go through the archway. Having some sensor lighting at the back would be useful to help with parking and getting to the back door. Overall we all enjoyed our stay. Thank you.
We had a very pleasant stay at the Old Bull. We enjoyed the hot tub, snooker table and dart board. We appreciated the welcome pack and the new air fryer. The Bull is situated in the historic market place and there was a great variety of restaurants and cafes with friendly locals and good atmospheres. We are a family of twelve from 79 to 5 and there was something for everyone. The 5 year old loved playing hide and seek!
We had a fantastic weekend stay here. It was very well equipped and when there was an issue with the heating, the owner sent a plumber round straight away to check. It is a great location for walks, pubs and places to eat. The bedrooms were spacious and the beds very comfy! Would definitely recommend.
I wish I could be more positive about the set up of this house and in the main we all had a lovely time. However, We booked thinking this still had the pub bar intact, in the same set up as The Crewe and Harpur, took me a few hours to get over the disappointment. The main disappointment was the kitchen facilities which were way too small for a Group of 12 adults. The fridge was very small and we couldnt fit the food in for 2 meals so had to use our cooler boxes and buy bags of ice everyday from the Coop in the High Street. No room to cool any drinks so again had to use cooler boxes. Kitchen needs a 2nd fridge andor drinks fridge. Oven was a usual domestic size oven so cooking a Sunday roast for 12 adults was again challenging so had to cook in batches. Local chippy on the Friday finishes at 7.15pm so that plan went out the window too and ended up with a few pizzas. There are a couple of walks from the town but not really peak walks so you need to drive to designated car parks on the peaks if you want to hike. The double bed on the top floor slopes up towards headboard so the guests had to sleep the opposite way around. The bed needs moving so your feet are not facing uphill. PLEASE buy some new darts for the dart board!! We just about managed to cobble 3 darts and flights together to have a darts comp. Let your guests know they need to take extra towels for the hot tub. The house towels were so small, they would have been ok for children. There is parking for 4 cars although Next door neighbour told us three but we managed to squeeze 4 in. There is free parking on the Square but outside is restricted apart from Sundays.
If there is one problem it is the neighbour who moaned twice about us using the hot tub. I don't recall anything in the description saying that the tub couldn't be used after eleven at night. If there was then my mistake and I apologise. If not, then we were not making a nuisance of ourselves and were mindful of keeping our voice levels down. After all is said and done, at the cost that I paid for two nights, I expect to be able to use the facilities and use common sense.
Maureen
I booked this property for a family reunion, age range 8 to 75. The property was spacious and we didn't feel on top of one another. The children loved playing hide and seek and the pool table and darts were a great hit. We had a couple of issues on arrival and Philip was quick to respond. In comparison with other properties we have stayed at the kitchen appliances were on the small size when catering for 12. However there was plenty of glasses cutlery and plates. We were also unable to open many of the windows to let in fresh air. The hot tub was a winner, but it was difficult to dry towels as there was only only a couple of clothes airers in the kitchen. Apart from the hot tub, there is no real garden space, just a place to park cars.

Spacious and sociable holiday home that was the perfect setting for a family celebration holiday with 9 people. Great location with some lovely pubs and cafes on the doorstep. House was well equipped, and the pool table, darts board and hot tub were an added bonus given we a little unlucky with the weather! Welcome goodies on arrival was a lovely touch. Comfy beds, large bedrooms and plenty of storage. Lounge had comfortable sofas with enough room for everyone. Kitchen was well equipped and enough of everything for a large number of people 2 kettles, multiple toasters etc made such a difference. Enjoyed a wonderful week and wouldnt hesitate to recommend.
Robert
Lovely location, lovely rooms and facilities. Nothing to fault.
Amazing house for 12 adults we celebrated a family 60th birthday and everyone loved it
Natalie
We had a really lovely stay & found everything perfect for our family getaway. A couple of suggestions which I realise may be difficult to achieve due to layout of the building. the oven is pretty small to accommodate 12 people. We tried cooking a full English for everyone which took ages. Maybe an addition of a separate grill such as George Forman could help with this. I realised after that it said we needed to bring our own tea towels but I had missed this so we had to buy some which was fine, but oven gloves would be helpful. we also purchased plastic glasses to take a drink around the hot tub. Would be good to invest in some of these. locals were really helpful. Found a quiz in the local pub, might be useful to provide info on things like this in a guest book. These are just suggestions though, we had a really brilliant time in a lovely place & would definitely recommend. Thank you!
Mathew
Superb location, kitchen could do with a bigger hob, and no small cooking pans, other than that excellent.
Angela
We had a wonderful week at the Old Bulls Head with extended family. It is a great location, a real home from home and we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay . The hot tub was a great bonus and the dart board and snooker table kept everybody entertained. Communication with the owner was excellent and the property was warm, clean and well maintained. The parking entrance is very tight for larger vehicles , but apart from that a perfect property that I would thoroughly recommend to others . We would definitely return .
Great property especially for the 10 of us size wise. Location good. The oven was not big enough for a large party such as us, and I would not want to try to do a roast dinner or Christmas dinner in it and it could have been cleaner as when it was put on the kitchen was smokey with burning grease from it. A couple of small niggles, wear and tear wise. Cupboard door in kitchen hanging off. Edging on the work top also coming off in one area. Door knob also in the kitchen dropping off. The main toaster has one side of it that didnt work, however there were 2 other additional ones, as well as 2 kettles which was good. We did get in the hot tub for 10 minutes, which was great as the weather was awful all weekend. A thoughtful conversion from an old pub. Lovely welcome pack thank you
Louise
Our stay included 9 adult family members & 1year old. We all had a great stay. Situation of the property was great for exploring the Peaks & tourist sites. Facilities were more than expected. Everything was there for the kitchen. Hot tub very clean. As we stayed in Nov a better outside light might be a consideration cos of the dark evenings.
Louise
We had a wonderful time celebrating my dad's 80th birthday at this property! Great facilities, particularly the hot tub, snooker table and darts board. Only negative the cutlery and some of the crockery was really dirty on arrival. Otherwise a great property to spend family time!!
Richard
A teapot would have been nice also a DVD player. However a lovely place with good facilities and comfy furniture. A great location.
Great place to stay for a large group of friends with a convenient location. Look forward to returning again soon.
We arrived a little early and the cleaner was extremely helpful and accommodating. Rooms are lovely. It's a lovely, quirky house.
Fantastic weekend had by all in this wonderful gem of a property. Loved how spacious and quirky the house was. Hot tub was spot on and the facilities were excellent. I would highly recommend this property for large parties.
We stayed as a group of friends couples, the house was spotless and had plenty ... We stayed as a group of friends couples, the house was spotless and had plenty of space for everyone, plenty of kitchen utensils, glasses, plated you name it they had it, outside you were straight onto market Street, plenty of pubs to go to and locals were so friendly, we will definitely go back
An absolute gem! Perfect property in a perfect location. Every amenity you need in walking distance. 6 fabulous walks straight from the doorstep do not miss the viewpoint at Eccles Pike. I would strongly recommend The Old Bulls Head to anybody considering it.
Sophie
We stayed at the Old Bull's Head over the Easter holidays and had a great time. The property was very clean, warm and really spacious for our group which was 7 adults and 3 kids plus our dogs. We really enjoyed using the hot tub and the pool table. There is a coop very close by and the kids enjoyed the Harry Potter shop just round the corner. There are walks into the countryside from Chapel itself or you can do a short drive about 15mins to Castleton which has caves to look round, Edale or Mam Tor for more walking options. We also had a day trip to Chatsworth which was a very impressive stately home with beautiful gardens, farm animals, ice cream and shops. We booked rock climbing for the kids for one morning with peak mountaineering which I really enjoyed, and also ventured to Buxton again, only 15mins drive for the shops, museum, little train in the park and a theatre show at the opera house. I would recommend this location for a holiday as it has something for everyone and the Bull's head was certainly very comfortable for us all. I would like to say a big thank you to the owners for a wonderful stay I would definitely recommend this property.
Gillian
This property is amazing! It is so full of character, beautifully presented and decorated to the highest standard. It is the perfect place to hold a big family weekend away in an excellent location, at the heart of the Peak District. The hot tub, poole and darts board kept us all thoroughly entertained! We were made to feel very at home with a surprise proseccotreats welcome pack and Phil the owner kept in touch by text to make sure we had everything we needed. We would highly recommend this property. Thank you Old Bull's Head for a truly memorable weekend
The Old Bulls Head was exactly what we needed for a family get together of four generations arriving from Cornwall, Wiltshire, London and Australia! ! Plenty of space in the bedrooms and communal areas all of which were extremely comfortable and warm despite the snow that had fallen. The kitchen was very well equipped and we cooked several times including a roast oven a little snug for this but planning made it possible. The snooker table was a big hit! We loved that we could walk out to eat, go to the pub or restaurant and pick up a coffee Twigs was great. We also did a number of walks from the house or with a short drive first. We could have done with a washing machine because of the Australian contingent including a baby and need to wash through some muddy clothing from the walks but it wasn't promised so my bad for not noticing. Would also have been nice to have bigger bath towels but didn't take the shine off the holiday! Hot tub was amazing and magical in the snow! Phil, the owner, was very responsive and helpful!
